FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WIIKWEMKOONG – March 5, 2025 – The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) is pleased to announce the resounding success of its inaugural ice fishing derby, held this past weekend. Despite the chilly weather conditions, approximately 200 community members from Wiikwemkoong gathered to participate in this exciting event.
The ice fishing derby provided a unique opportunity for the WTPS to forge meaningful relationships with the youth and families of the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory. This initiative was part of the force’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with the community.
“The bonds we established with these young individuals and their families will have a lasting impact,” said Raven Manitowabi, Constable and Event Chair, WTPS. “Today’s youth are the future’s teens and adults, and fostering meaningful connections now will shape the years to come.”
The event would not have been possible without the generous support from Chief Ominika and various sponsoring organizations within our community. WTPS thanks all involved: Wikwemikong Anglers, Wikwemikong Tourism, Wikwemikong Prevention Services, Wikwemikong Health Care Centre, Wikwemikong Fire Department, Wikwemikong Security Team, OPP K-9 Barry Kelly Unit, Public Works Department, Wikwemikong Board of Education, and Healthy Baby Program.
“Events like our ice fishing derby are crucial for building trust between the police and the community,” said Ron Gignac, Chief of Police at WTPS. “Thank you to everyone who took time from their busy schedules to make this event a success. We are creating a foundation of trust that will benefit the future of our community.”
This collaborative effort underscores our shared commitment to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all residents in our vibrant community.
