Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service Introduces New Cultural Orientation Program for Employees

WIIKWEMKOONG – March 23, 2026 – The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) has introduced a comprehensive Cultural Orientation Program designed to deepen cultural understanding, strengthen community trust, and better prepare members of the police service to serve the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory with respect and alignment to local values.
The Cultural Orientation Program was developed to build cultural awareness and reduce misunderstandings, enhance relationships between WTPS personnel and local residents, and improve communication, safety, and overall confidence in engagement efforts. It also ensures that WTPS practices remain aligned with reconciliation‑focused commitments, supporting culturally informed, respectful, and people‑centered policing.
“Our responsibility as a police service begins with understanding the people we serve,” said Ron Gignac, Chief of Police, WTPS. “This orientation program strengthens our ability to build trust, communicate with respect, and carry out our duties in a way that reflects the values of Wiikwemkoong. It ensures every member joining WTPS is prepared to work in true partnership with the residents of this Territory. We give thanks to our elders, our community partners, our citizens, and the knowledge keepers who helped us develop our program.”
Built around structured learning modules, the program provides all WTPS employees with foundational knowledge of local history, traditional practices, governance structures, cultural protocols, and community expectations. Each module is supported by ongoing mentorship, creating a model for continuous learning and meaningful connection with the community.
The Cultural Orientation Program features a range of interactive and community‑based learning experiences, including workshops led by local knowledge keepers, storytelling sessions with community groups, and guided tours throughout the Territory. Participants also engage in scenario‑based cultural learning designed to deepen understanding and strengthen practical skills.
As part of its long-term commitment to cultural excellence and professional growth, WTPS has also expanded its tuition and education assistance program. Every full-time employee is eligible for up to $1,000 per year to pursue cultural or career‑related training and courses on their own time, complementing the foundation provided by the new Cultural Orientation Program. The initiative encourages participation in culture and tradition‑focused learning that reinforces the program’s curriculum and supports lifelong development.
