Whether cheering students from the sidelines or educating riders on all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety, the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) is deepening its commitment to community-focused policing. Recent activities reflect the force’s continued dedication to connecting with residents, supporting youth development, and fostering a culture of safety across Wiikwemkoong.

Cheering from the Sidelines: WTPS Supports Island Track Youth

On a sunny day in Manitowaning, the Island Track event brought together young athletes from across the region. Among the supporters were Ogimaa Ominika, Chief Ron Gignac, and Inspector Duffy, who attended to show support for students from Wiikwemkoong.

“This event was a great reminder that community safety goes beyond enforcement, it’s also about being present, celebrating our youth, and building trust,” said Chief Gignac. “We were thrilled to see the talent and spirit on display.”

Community leaders spent the day interacting with students and families, strengthening bonds with youth and reinforcing their message of positive, respectful relationships between police and the community.

On Patrol and Informed: Officers Promote ATV Safety

With summer underway, WTPS has launched an initiative to promote ATV safety, led by Officers Shawana and VanDrunen. Patrolling the area on department ATVs, they’ve been engaging riders in conversations about protective gear, legal riding requirements, and responsible operation.

To expand this effort, WTPS is hosting an ATV Safety Education Session in collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) on June 16th for our high school students at the Wiikwemkoong High School. Topics will include:

  • Wear It Right – Why helmets and gear matter
  • Check Before You Ride – How to inspect your ATV
  • Know the Law – ATV rules and regulations
  • Ride Smart – Best practices for safe, respectful riding

A Lasting Commitment to Community Safety

“WTPS has a goal of keeping the community safe and continuing to promote the well-being of the residents,” said Chief Gignac. “We will be actively patrolling on ATVs throughout the summer and into the fall to ensure safe, informed, and enjoyable use.”

These efforts are part of a broader WTPS strategy to maintain a safe, supportive, and connected community, whether on foot, at public events, or out on the trails.

By building these relationships with our young people in the realms of ATV, Marine, and water safety, we seek to enhance their personal safety and wellbeing for years to come when enjoying outdoors activities, hunting, fishing, riding, and camping.    Our K-9 visit program, speakers series resiliency sessions, and forthcoming school liaison officer program adds to our commitment to the young people of our community.

Thank you for the exceptional support that you give to the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service.
