Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service Introduces Body‑Worn Cameras

WIIKWEMKOONG – May 12, 2026 – The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) will be deploying Axon Body Worn Cameras this week. Designated uniformed members on the frontline will be among the first to be equipped with this technology as part of a phased implementation.
All officers equipped with body‑worn cameras have completed comprehensive training covering camera activation and usage, privacy considerations, data management and retention, and public disclosure requirements. These measures ensure the responsible and respectful use of the technology while protecting the privacy of community members and officers alike. The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service is taking an important step forward in enhancing accountability, transparency, and public trust with the introduction of body‑worn cameras for frontline officers.
Body‑worn cameras are widely recognized as a valuable tool in modern policing. “This deployment represents the first step toward broader adoption,” said Ron Gignac, Chief of Police, WTPS. “We anticipate expanding the use of body‑worn cameras throughout the Service in 2026–2027, as part of WTPS’s ongoing commitment to accountability, transparency, and strengthening public trust.”
