5th Annual Tour de Force Unites Officers and Community in Tribute to PC Marc Hovingh and Fallen Heroes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mindemoya, ON — September 9, 2025More than 100 officers, families, and community members gathered in Mindemoya on September 6 for the 5th annual Tour de Force, a cycling event honouring fallen law enforcement officers and celebrating the enduring legacy of Provincial Constable Marc Hovingh.

The event began as the Marc Hovingh Memorial Ride following his tragic death in 2020. Known for his kindness and humour, Marc left a lasting mark on Manitoulin Island. Today, his spirit lives on through this ride, which unites cyclists from across Ontario to pedal with purpose, unity, and respect.

Proceeds support the Survivors of Law Enforcement (SOLE) and the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation. Several SOLE members joined Marc’s wife, Lianne Hovingh, at the opening ceremony.

Cyclists chose from 30 km, 70 km, or 140 km routes, with participants including OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique and officers from Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service.

This year also introduced the Marc Hovingh Memorial Youth Bike Ride and Rodeo, organized by the OPP Youth Foundation with the assistance of UCCM staff, Marie Ford. Executive Director Sandy Poredos announced a new annual $2,500 bursary for a Manitoulin Secondary School student who embodies Marc’s compassion and kindness — one of the school’s largest bursaries.

The Rodeo welcomed 45 youth, who took part in safety drills and bike skills training led by officers from OPP, UCCM, and WTPS. Six new bicycles were donated to island youth, including two presented to children from Wiikwemkoong.

Community services also joined the festivities, with police and fire departments bringing vehicles and activities for local families to enjoy.

“The Tour de Force is more than a ride, it’s a living tribute to the courage and sacrifice of our fallen officers,” said Chief of Police, Ron Gignac, WTPS. “It brings our communities together in remembrance, resilience, and hope. Honouring Marc Hovingh in this way ensures that his spirit continues to inspire future generations.”

The 5th Annual Tour de Force was a day of remembrance, compassion, and commitment — honouring the past, empowering the present, and inspiring the future.
