Driving in Winter

  • Slow Down: Reduce speed on snow or ice-covered roads; stopping distances are much longer.
  • Increase Following Distance: Keep at least 8–10 seconds behind the vehicle in front.
  • Clear All Windows: Remove snow and ice from windows, mirrors, and lights before driving.
  • Avoid Sudden Movements: Brake gently to avoid skidding; steer smoothly.
  • Emergency Kit: Carry blankets, flashlight, food, water, and a charged phone.
  • Check Tires: Ensure proper tread depth and consider winter tires for better traction.

Ice Safety

  • Know the Thickness: Ice should be at least:
    • 4 inches for walking/skating
    • 5–7 inches for snowmobiles
    • 8–12 inches for cars/light trucks
  • Avoid Unknown Areas: Stay away from moving water, inlets, or areas with cracks.
  • Test Before Stepping: Use an ice chisel or auger to check thickness.
  • Wear a Life Jacket: Especially when ice fishing or near open water.
  • Have Rescue Gear: Rope, ice picks, and a buddy system are essential.

Snowmobile Safety

  • Wear Proper Gear: Helmet, goggles, insulated clothing, and gloves.
  • Stay on Marked Trails: Avoid unfamiliar terrain and thin ice.
  • Never Ride Alone: Always inform someone of your route and expected return time.
  • Watch Speed: High speeds reduce reaction time on icy or uneven surfaces.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Impaired judgment and slower reflexes increase accident risk.
  • Carry Emergency Supplies: First aid kit, spare parts, and a GPS or map.
