Nookomisnaang Shelter provides a safe, supportive space for individuals and families experiencing family violence in Wiikwemikong Unceded Territory. Our services include emergency housing, crisis counseling, cultural healing programs, and advocacy. Nookomisnaang offers traditional teachings, wellness activities, and aftercare support to help clients on their healing journey. The shelter is open to all genders and families, with no cost for services.

Haven House (Manitoulin Family Resources)

Haven House offers a safe, supportive shelter and wraparound services for individuals and families impacted by domestic violence in Mindemoya, ON. We provide emergency housing (up to 10 beds), 24/7 crisis support, community-based counselling, safety planning, children’s services, and transitional housing assistance. All programs are free, wheelchair-accessible, and include support for issues like abuse, assault, and addictions.

Noojmowin Teg’s Sexual & Domestic Violence Services team—Ka Naad Maa Go (“We Will Help You”)—offers confidential, culturally rooted support for survivors aged 12+ across Manitoulin Island.

What We Provide

  • Initial assessments and trauma-informed counselling
  • Crisis intervention, emotional support, and stabilization care
  • Advocacy, case management, and help navigating systems
  • Forensic exams, STI/HIV testing and treatment, pregnancy testing, PEP, and emergency contraception
  • Personalized risk assessments, safety planning, and referrals to community supports

Manitoulin Northshore Victim Services offers free, confidential support to victims of crime, tragedy, or disaster throughout Manitoulin Island and the North Shore.

Services & Programs

  • 24/7 Crisis Support & Intervention: Immediate emotional support and safety planning, often coordinated with local police and emergency services.
  • Victim Crisis Assistance Ontario (VCAO): On-site early intervention to help stabilize situations and connect individuals with further resources.
  • Victim Quick Response Program+ (VQRP+): Short-term financial aid for essentials like meals, transportation, accommodation, and counseling in the aftermath of violent crime.
  • Advocacy & Case Management: Support navigating legal, medical, and social services through one-on-one assistance.
  • Public Education & Community Outreach: Informing the community and raising awareness about victims’ rights and available supports.

Mnidoo Mnising Mobile Crisis Response Team 

The Mnidoo Mnising Mobile Crisis Response Team provides 24/7 mobile mental wellness and crisis intervention services to all seven First Nation communities on Manitoulin Island. It offers rapid, culturally-informed support during mental health, addiction, or emotional crises.

 

Services & Programming

  • 24/7 Mobile Crisis Response — Team members (including paraprofessionals, and sometimes law-enforcement or medical support) respond directly to community calls, offering de-escalation, emotional support, risk assessment, and stabilization care.
  • Pop-up Community Check-ins — Regular outreach events (e.g., lunch pop-ups, community tents) where team members connect with individuals in casual settings to offer mental health support.
  • Harm Reduction & Wellness Services — Assistance includes harm reduction supplies, referrals to treatment, mental health counselling, and practical support like a warm meal or a cup of tea.
  • Crisis Coordination — Works with EMS, police, and hospitals; follows up via telemedicine (e.g., with provincial health authorities) to ensure continuity of care.
